GHS girls earn state tournament berth; ranked Number One

Gloucester High School varsity field hockey players reached the 5A Regional finals and earned a state tournament berth with a 6-0 shutout of fourth-seed Nansemond River on Tuesday.
The top-ranked Dukes are scheduled to face second-seed Menchville in the regional finale at 5 o’clock today at the National Field Hockey Training Center in Virginia Beach.
“We played really well yesterday,” Gloucester coach Mike Miller said on Wednesday. “We got off to a good start and really came out of the box and got things going.”
The Dukes held a 4-0 lead at halftime and tacked on two more goals in the second half. Kessa Romero had two goals and two assists in the win, Ali Goodwin had two goals, Kate Neikirk had a goal and an assist, and Farren Winter scored. 
Additional scoring assists were provided by H.P. Johnson, Elizabeth Thomas and Tally Vaughan.
