GHS girls close out perfect 16-0 season; earn top regional seed

The Gloucester High School varsity field hockey team handed a 17-goal shutout to visiting Phoebus on Monday to close out a perfect 16-0 regular season. 

The Dukes are the top seed in the 5A Regional Tournament and will take on a yet-undetermined eighth seed team at 1 p.m. Monday at the National Field Hockey Training Center in Virginia Beach. 

Kessa Romero and Cara O’Beirne had three goals each against the Phantoms while Allison Goodwin, Carli Walke and Alyssa O’Beirne had two goals each. Whitney Robins, Kate Neikirk, Elizabeth Thomas, Karagan Winfrey and Megan Crowley also scored. 

Neikirk and Romero had two scoring assists each and assists were provided by Meg Teagle, Farren Winter, Ainsley Miller, Thomas, Walke and Crowley. 

Gloucester coach Mike Miller said Phoebus had wanted to cancel the game, which was originally scheduled for today, but Miller wanted the opportunity to honor his senior players and to get a 16th game in before post-season play....
