GHS girls, 20-0, beat Atlee to advance to state semis

Gloucester bested Atlee, 9-1, Tuesday evening in the Gloucester High School stadium to advance to Friday’s Class 5 State Field Hockey Tournament semifinals at South County High School. 

“It took a little bit to get used to the field, and Atlee played differently this time,” said GHS coach Mike Miller, whose Lady Dukes blanked Atlee, 6-0, in Williamsburg back in August. With the win Tuesday, Gloucester improved to 20-0.

“We made some defensive adjustments. We played a good game and did a good job. The girls did a nice job in the circle and a good job in playing the cage,” Miller said. Atlee scored its lone goal with about a minute left in the game.

There were showers just before game time but the crowned field at GHS had drained well just before the opening whistle. “The field was perfect and there was a big crowd on hand, so it was nice,” said Miller.
