GHS football falls to York in Friday’s Battle of the Bridge

The Gloucester High School varsity football team failed to put a number in the win column Friday, as York came out the victor in the latest iteration of the Battle of the Bridge.

By the time inclement weather caused a delay in the third quarter, the game was already in the Falcons’ favor, 39-16. That score would go on to be the final. “York came out with an attitude. Those boys were ready to play,” said head coach John Scalf.

York came out hot in the first quarter, scoring 15 unanswered points. Gloucester would get on the board with six points in the second, but York would answer with 10 of their own and bring the score total to 25-6 at half. 

Gloucester put up a touchdown and field goal in the third but the Dukes’ defense was ultimately unable to rein in the Falcons offensively. Gloucester struggled to generate a pass rush much of the game. “We just couldn’t get enough pressure on them,” Scalf explained.
