The Gloucester High School boys’ varsity soccer team ended the regular season on a nine-game winning streak and heads into the Region 4A tournament as the #1 seed.
The Dukes, who currently hold a 12-1-1 record, capped off the regular season Monday with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Woodside Wolverines.
The game served as the Dukes’ Senior Night, with seniors Kohlby Wilson, Mariner Cope and Tanner Bailey honored and recognized.
Wilson scored the only goal in the first half to put GHS up 1-0 at the break. In the second half, Corey Skay scored the team’s second goal to secure the win. Max Bell and K.J. Wolford each had an assist during the game and goalie Jesse Manheim kept the Wolverines out of Gloucester’s goal.
The GHS boys earned a first-round bye in the regional tournament and will host the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday.
Girls’ soccer
The Gloucester High School varsity girls’ soccer team earned a bid in the regional tournament after ending Monday’s game against Woodside in a 1-1 tie. The Lady Dukes ended the regular season with a record of 8-6-2 and are ranked fourth in the region.
Monday’s game was also the team’s Senior Night, where they recognized and celebrated seniors Avery Watkins and Rylie Williams.
Following a scoreless first half, Woodside got on the scoreboard first, and Gloucester responded with a goal from Watkins off an assist from Emily Baker. After two scoreless overtime periods, the game ended in the 1-1 tie.
Gloucester was scheduled to return to the field for the first round of regional play on Wednesday.
