GHS band, ensemble earn ‘superior’ marks

The Gloucester High School symphonic band and wind ensemble each received a rating of "superior" at the District 8 state concert assessment held last weekend at Smithfield High School.

During the annual assessment event, each band performs three state-approved selections for a panel of judges representing the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association. There are five possible performance ratings ranging from poor to superior.

Since 1989, the GHS band has been one of the most consistently superior-rated bands in the region, according to band director Tom Emory.
