GHS atop district golf standings

Gloucester High School golfers combined for a score of 356 to win the Peninsula District match at the Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run last Thursday.

Menchville followed with 362, Hampton was third with 390 and Woodside was fourth with 403. Dukes’ standout Nathan Gross was the medalist with a score of 78. 

After four matches, Gloucester leads the field with 1,249 strokes followed by Menchville with 1,264, Hampton with 1,399, Warwick with 1,568, Woodside with 1,574 and Kecoughtan with 1,597. 

Gross still leads individual averages in the district with 79.25. Two Menchville golfers are second and third with 83 and 84.5, respectively. Gloucester’s Jeremy Carr and Blake Taylor are fourth and fifth with averages of 86.25 and 87.5, respectively.

The Dukes won Monday’s match with a team score of 355 at Cypress Creek Golfers Club in Smithfield, according to GHS coach Toby Calloway. Other team scores were not available at press time.
