GEORGE THOMAS ‘TOMMY’ STAINBACK

George Thomas “Tommy” Stainback, 68, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015.

Tommy was a native of Newport News and a Middle Peninsula resident for 27 years. He was a 1964 graduate of Ferguson High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1966, and in 1973 he made an inter-service transfer to the U.S. Army and into A Company/2nd Battalion/11th Special Forces Group (Airborne) to become a Green Beret. While serving with this unit, he made four OCONUS deployments. He retired in 1994 as a Sgt. First Class after 28 years of faithful service to his country.

He enjoyed fishing, treasure hunting with his metal detector, and was a recipient of the Order of the Arrow from the Boy Scouts of America. Tommy also volunteered annually with Clan Morrison during the Richmond Highland Games.

He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Debbie; his daughter, Holly N. Bryant and her husband Parker of Saluda; two sisters, Sissy Winfrey (Sam) of Newport News, Juanita Gray (Raymond) of St. Augustine, Fla., and a brother, Charlie F. Stainback and his wife Helen of Newport News.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at Coastal Community Church, 6406 George Washington Memorial Highway. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.
