GEORGE F. LEIPER

George F. Leiper of Gloucester, was called home to Our Lord in the early morning hours on July 15, 2017, just two months shy of his 99th birthday.

George was born Sept. 14, 1918 in Waterford, Connecticut, the son of Francis and Mary Douton Leiper.

George and his wife Sue moved to Gloucester in the ’50s. George remained in Gloucester until he relocated to an assisted living facility in Woodbridge in 2010.

George was a veteran and worked for many years as a machinist at the Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown. He could make or fix anything, but he always said what he loved most was supervising and watching other people work!

He loved fishing on the York River and was an avid golfer. His kindness and caring knew no bounds and he was a friend to all who knew him. He was referred to as the “Mayor” in the neighborhood. It was always a learning experience hearing his stories of the old days in Gloucester, and hearing about his wonderful memories of Connecticut and his summers at Pleasure Beach.

Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his wife, Sarah (Sue) Hawkins Leiper; his brother, Leslie; his sister, Edith Glidden, and his faithful companion of many years, Jacqueline Thomas.

He leaves to cherish his memory his niece, Judith Graziano (John) of Waterford; nephew, Norman Glidden (Marguerite) of Ledyard, Connecticut; nephew, Les Hawkins (Lynn) of College Park, Maryland; many great- nieces and -nephews; wonderful neighbors and special friends, Sam and Rosanne Bunting of Gloucester.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29 at Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery, Gloucester.

Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge.
