Gemerek retires from Bay Agency

Allyn Gemerek, president of Bay Agency, last week announced his retirement effective April 30, after serving the agency for more than 30 years.

Kathy Vesley-Massey, the agency’s chief operating officer, was promoted to fill the vacancy.

Gemerek’s resignation follows more than two months where Gemerek had been out of the office and the Bay Aging board of directors had held several closed meetings on personnel matters, but few details of those meetings were announced.

The closed meetings followed two state audits of the agency that had questioned Gemerek’s salary and benefits, his mileage on business trips, how a staff car was procured, and several other matters.

"This is an employment issue and I am rather restrained in what I can say," board chairman Jimmie Carter said Tuesday. "We are appreciative of the organization that Allyn has built," he added.
