Gazette-Journal celebrates 75 years

The Gazette-Journal today begins celebration of its 75th anniversary month. At about this time in 1937, the Gloucester Gazette and Mathews Journal were wrapping up their final issues, preparing for their merger into the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal.

The new weekly newspaper, owned by a new corporation called Tidewater Newspapers, Inc., made its appearance on Thursday, Nov. 11, 1937, and has served the two counties without interruption since that time.

During this month we invite you to drop by our offices in Gloucester and Mathews to sign our guest books and to register for 30 prizes—one for each day in November—to be awarded at the end of the month.

We are planning an anniversary section on Thursday, Nov. 15. It will contain a review of the local scene and be supported by ads sold at 75 percent of the regular retail rate. The month will also be marked by specials on subscriptions, new and renewed, in print and online.
