Gateway Private School opens Gloucester facility

Gateway Private School opened its doors Sept. 18 for its new Gloucester facility on Crab Thicket Road.

Owner K. Fitzsimmons is the school’s clinical director. She said Alicia Carter is the regional director and James Montgomery is principal of the Gloucester school. Gateway has other schools in Montross and Stafford. The building on Crab Thicket Road previously housed Verizon offices.

Fitzsimmons said the school specializes in instruction for children with disabilities. Gateway tries to bring out strengths in the children with intensive individualized-therapeutic care.

The school has a one teacher to four student ratio, Fitzsimmons said, with grades kindergarten-12 offered. Gateway employs about 30 people total for its three locations.

“Each student is given the opportunity to work with the team of teachers and professionals to identify areas of concentration, and to develop plans and solutions,” a release said. The Gloucester school includes a career and technical center, which Fitzsimmons said has a vocational lab where students can learn culinary, carpentry and computer skills.

The Gloucester school also has five classrooms, a cafeteria, an art room, music room, and counseling and office space. The therapeutic team includes the clinical director, school qualified mental health professionals, and behavioral support staff.

Gateway provides academic classrooms that are “highly structured environments that modulate to meet the need of each individual student,” the release said.
