Gas prices dip below $3 mark locally


Motorists have felt some relief at the gasoline pumps recently, with prices for fuel dropping significantly in recent weeks.

A check of local fuel prices found a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline as low as $2.879 last week; the lowest price found in a check Tuesday morning was $2.979.

Many stations in the area hovered in the 3.079 range Tuesday, while in lower York County prices ranged from $3.069 to $3.259.

The Wall Street Journal reported that “a global glut of fuel oil” is the main reason that gasoline prices have been tumbling since highs hit in June. “Relatively cheap oil has made it more profitable for refiners to produce gasoline and other fuels,” the article stated.

In addition, industry officials said that it is cheaper to produce the winter blend of gasoline than it is for the summer blend that is formulated differently to protect against air pollution. But the lower gasoline prices recently aren’t really that low, said Sally Woolri...
