Gary Wayne Ogden, age 83, died on December 19, 2020 in Glen Allen. Gary graduated from Mathews High School in 1956. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and then in the United States Air Force, Army and Merchant Marine. In 1966, he became a firefighter in the Newport News Fire Department and was there for 17 years before retiring. In 1983, he became a firefighter for the Federal Government serving at both the Naval Weapons Station and at Cheatham Annex in York County. He retired from there in 2003 after 20 years of service. Gary worked part-time as a security officer for the Mariners’ Museum and Park in Newport News, and then at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. He was a very hard worker and had a strong work ethic. When he was younger, he enjoyed hunting at his hunt club, fishing, and he loved to cook for his fellow firemen at whatever fire station he was at. Gary played the guitar, sang gospel music, and was a true fan of the Washington Redskins football team. He was a devoted member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church and he sang in the choir. Gary’s biological father (Blanton D. Ogden) died before Gary turned three years old and his mother married William Soles, who raised him as his own child.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Margie Soles; a brother, Blanton D. Ogden Jr.; father, William Soles, and a son, William Blanton Ogden. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Bonnie S. Ogden; daughter, Stephanie Ogden and her children, Richard Ogden, Matthew Kirtley, Johnathon Kirtley, and Victoria Kirtley, all of Richmond; son, Ken Ogden (wife Renee) and their children, Ashlynn Ogden, Madison Ogden, and Grayson Ogden, all of Glen Allen. The family received friends Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home. Masks were required for entry and social distancing was mandatory. A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Bud Goude was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at Gloucester Point Baptist Church, followed by 2:30 burial in Mount Vernon Memorial Park Cemetery, 11220 Nuckols Road, Glen Allen, Va. 23059.
