G.I. Civic League establishes charitable foundation

The Gwynn’s Island Civic League has formed a charitable foundation to help island residents who have worthy needs or are facing emergency situations.

In a meeting Friday, the committee that was organized to oversee development of the foundation discussed the results of their work.

“For some time I’ve thought the civic league could become more involved in trying to give back,” said league president Joe Atherton. “Now, our foundation is formed and funded by the civic league and receiving additional funds from members.”

Atherton said the league intends to make every effort possible to use 100 percent of the foundation’s funds for the benefit of the community. Any expenses incurred will be paid for by the civic league or committee members, he said.
