G.I. bridge now open to marine traffic

UPDATE: The Route 223 bridge over Gwynn's Island has resumed openings for marine traffic, the Virginia Department of Transportation reported Wednesday afternoon, following an inspection of the bridge's tender house. The bridge will resume marine openings six scheduled times a day: 2 a.m., 5 a.m., 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Both lanes of Route 223 remain open to vehicle traffic.

The Gwynn’s Island bridge has been closed for marine openings until further notice.

According to notice Tuesday from the Virginia Department of Transportation, a piece of equipment being towed by a vehicle struck the bridge’s tender house that afternoon. Route 223 traffic was reduced to a single lane, the release stated, but both travel lanes had reopened by 9 p.m.
