Funds to be sought for Mathews broadband project

The Mathews County Broadband Advisory Board will be asking county supervisors to approve several measures when BAB chair Judy Rowe makes her monthly presentation to the board next week. Supervisors will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, in the Mathews High School Auditorium.
During the broadband board’s meeting on Tuesday, members voted to ask the board of supervisors to earmark up to $678,555 of funding the county is receiving under the American Rescue Plan to pay for the two broadband towers that supervisors approved last month.
The projected cost of the two towers includes $13,333 for GEO analysis, $9,667 for foundation design, $250,000 for foundation installation, $66,667 for pole erection, $4,433 for power readiness, and $221,462 for tower equipment. During discussion of the motion, consultant Jeff Beekhoo of Broadband Telecom Services said he had added 20 percent in contingency fees, or $113,092, to those amounts, as well.
