The Piankatank Community League’s 2017 Book Buddy Fund Drive is off to a good start thanks to a new brochure designed by league member Susan Drew Hayhurst.

In order to support its objective of advancing educational opportunities in neighborhood schools, the league is soliciting funds to purchase books for selected students at Petsworth Elementary School, according to spokesperson Susan Malcolm.

In July of 2008, Petsworth Elementary School Community Engagement Coordinator Cindy Thomas and then-school principal Evelyn Perhac were contacted with a proposal to start a book donation program that would reach a greater number of students and their families.

“Their suggestion was for the league to have a project that would encourage reading at home for students who do not have books at home and to encourage accelerated readers,” Malcolm said.
