From red to black: Thanksgiving weekend kicks off local merchants’ busy season

Lots of shoppers opened their wallets wide in Gloucester during the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a check with some local merchants indicated.

Many businesses said they experienced larger-than-usual crowds both on Black Friday and on Small Business Saturday.

Although crowds were a pleasant surprise for some of the smaller shops during the weekend, larger retailers like Peebles, located at York River Crossing Shopping Center, Hayes, tried to capture some extra holiday traffic by offering advance promotions.

Some residents out shopping indicated they plan to spend a bit less this year, but others said they plan to spend a little more. Erin Gordon of Hayes knew exactly how many more people she was shopping for this year—one—with the addition of her 11-month-old son, Paul.

“People are trying to stretch their dollars,” said Beulah Mason of Wicomico, out shopping Monday at Dollar General, located at Hayes Plaza Shopping Center, Hayes.
