Friends turn over Hudgins Wing to county

After four years of planning, fundraising, renovations, and just plain hard work, the Friends of the Mathews Memorial Library has turned over ownership of the recently-completed H. Bland Hudgins Wing of the library to the county.

Friends president Maree Morgan presented the paperwork Tuesday to Mathews County Board of Supervisors’ chairman Charles Ingram.

The Friends accepted ownership of the former Radio Shack building from the family of the late Dr. H. Bland Hudgins in June 2010 with the intent of eventually giving it to the county for use by the library.

Under Morgan’s guidance, the organization was responsible for managing the entire process during the three phases: planning, fundraising and construction. The bright space has proved to be popular with adult library patrons, who now have a reading and computer room, and with teenagers, who now have their own teen center. A conference room, staff quarters, and a youth room found out the addition.
