FRANKLIN JAMES

Franklin James, 95, formerly of Portsmouth, Va., died on March 25, 2012. Elizabeth "Liz" Winder James, his beloved wife of 70 years, was by his side when God called him home.

Frank was a native of Mobjack, Va., and was the last of 11 children born to Captain and Mrs. Jefferson James. He was a longtime member and Ruling Elder of 1st Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth. He loved his God, his family, and his country. He was an Army veteran of the Pacific Theater of WWII.

He retired in 1983 after 34 years from Procter and Gamble. He and Liz travelled and enjoyed life together after he retired. Frank was known for his loving manner and his sense of humor.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Jeff James of Suffolk; his grandchildren, Mallory James, "Jay" James, Ryan Basham, and Ben James; 15 nieces and nephews, and many other relatives.

Frank was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, who called him "Granga."

A memorial service was conducted by the Rev. Kerry Westerwick at the 1st Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth, at 11 a.m. on March 31. A reception followed the service. Interment will be private at a later date.

The family is grateful for the caregivers of Dominion Village Assisted Living and Community Care Hospice.

Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge of arrangements.
