Fox Mill Run bridge project complete

The project to replace the southbound Fox Mill Run bridge on Main Street in Gloucester has been completed, with a final tour of the project slated by officials this Friday. All travel lanes through the corridor have reopened.

Robert Pickett, district environmental manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Fredericksburg District Office, which includes Gloucester in its service territory, said Tuesday that the new bridge opened to two lanes of traffic last week. The northbound bridge which handled shared north- and southbound traffic for about nine months, opened its two lanes to northbound traffic only earlier this week.

Pickett said construction was completed about one month earlier than projected, in part because of favorable weather. The construction project began last fall.

The new bridge, which Pickett said was designed to last 50 years or more, was necessary because the old southbound bridge was "functionally obsolete."
