Foster named MHS interim principal

Alexis Foster, Mathews High School’s assistant principal for almost nine years, was named the school’s interim principal Tuesday night.

The appointment came at the same time the Mathews County School Board accepted the resignation of Dr. Toni Childress, who has served in the school’s top administrative post since June of 2015.

A 1996 graduate of MHS, Foster returned to his alma mater in July of 2009 to serve as assistant principal under then-principal David Malechek. Following Malechek’s retirement two years later, the school board appointed Albert Green to the post. Green left in 2015 to accept a position with York County Schools, at which time Childress was named his successor.

Following Tuesday’s meeting, which was held in the MHS media center, Childress said that she has accepted a position with the state. She declined to elaborate. Friday will be her last day at Mathews High School, she said.
