Mathews County will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. next Thursday, Nov. 7, for Fort Nonsense Historical Park, located at the intersection of Routes 14 and 3 at North. The public is invited.
Members of the Mathews County Historical Society and county officials will gather at the newly-created park, which has handicapped-accessible walking trails and a picnic shelter and is marked by a replica of a period cannon.
The park’s development was a collaboration between the historical society, which owned the land, and the county. Members researched the park’s history, arranged for archaeological excavation, assisted in applying for $575,000 in transportation grants to help fund the $718,750 project, and oversaw the park’s design by Land Studio of Williamsburg. They have turned the site over to Mathews County as a public park.
