Fort Nonsense Heritage Day to be held in conjunction with Market Days

Cannon and musket fire. The lilting strains of period music. The chatter of ladies and the rough voices of soldiers.

These sounds and more will be heard during Fort Nonsense Heritage Day, Saturday, Sept. 12 near Mathews County’s Fort Nonsense Historical Park at the intersection of Routes 14 and 3.

The daylong event, running concurrently with Mathews Market Days, will include artillery and infantry demonstrations, as well as living history and historical artwork displays.

The 55th and 56th Virginia Infantry units will have a military camp for public view. Soldiers will be on hand to explain what camp life was like and answer questions. The Gloucester Artillery will have several types of Civil War artillery on display and demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the day.

Living history displays will include a military doctor and the “Ladies Aid Society” sponsored by the Sally Tompkins chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Society members will tell how...
