Lorraine Forrest of Port Haywood, a Mathews County native and retired Dominion Power employee, announced her candidacy this week for the Mathews County School Board.
“I think our schools have good teachers who need our support and encouragement—especially now, as we begin our post-Covid virus school year,” she said.
“We need to look more closely at how we are preparing our students, from kindergarten to high school graduates, for the workplace—how to earn a living, and how to be good citizens. I look forward to working with our school leaders to help this happen.”
Forrest, 66, who grew up at Susan, attended and graduated from Mathews Public Schools, and has an associate degree in business administration from Rappahannock Community College.
She started and is still active in an after-school program at Antioch Church 15 years ago that continues to serve students from Mathews.
She is also First Vice President of the Continental Society, Mathews Chapter and is a volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Mathews. Forrest will be at the Mathews Farmers’ Market on Saturday to get signatures for her candidacy petitions that are due June 8 to the Board of Elections.
Two seats are up for election this fall on the Mathews County School Board—those held by Linda Hodges and Bambi Thompson.
