A former Gloucester resident was fatally shot at his Yorktown home on June 24. Devon Coates, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene after York Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting call at the Yorktown Square apartments in the 200 block of Barham Boulevard at 12:28 a.m., according to York Sheriff’s Lt. Dennis Ivey.

Ivey said later that day, investigators arrested William E. Burks, 28, last known to live in the 100 block of Spring Road in Yorktown, in connection with the shooting.

Ivey said Burks was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and wearing body armor while committing a crime. Burks is being held in the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond. Ivey said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
