For the birds

Even though the weather lately has been strictly for the birds (loose translation: pretty lousy), there have been a lot of unique feathered friends who have been out and about during this unseasonably cold weather. At top left, Tom Lakin was in his Williams Wharf Road home on Sunday when he spied this heron enjoying a bit of ice-cold sushi on the East River. The heron was so close that Lakin had to take the picture from inside his house. He ventured outside to get these pictures of a majestic bald eagle (perched on an osprey nest, above, and flying away, below). Thomas Scott, also of Mathews, saw this snowy owl recently as the bird sat on the outboard motor of his boat. The owl then took off across the Mobjack Bay heading southwest, in the direction of the New Point Comfort Lighthouse.
