For the birds

Census takers for the Audubon Society Bird Count held Sunday in Mathews spread out across the county, looking and listening on land and sea for birds of all sizes and habitats. Above, at Bethel Beach, Don and Joyce McKelvey, covering the Winter Harbor sector, look across Chesapeake Bay to identify waterfowl. Forty birders took part in Sunday’s count, cataloging 103 species and counting more than 10,000 birds, according to compiler Mark Sopko. For details of the Middle Peninsula count, which was held on Dec. 27, see related story.
