Flounder fishing inconsistent in local waters

Fishing over the Independence Day holiday weekend was a mixed bag, according to local reports.

Flounder fishing has been inconsistent in the Buoy 42/Cell areas, Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters in Cobbs Creek reported. "We did weigh two citations this week from that area," Thrash said. "Some anglers have had near limit catches while others struggle."

Cobia, he said, are being caught at York Spit on live eels and should be available in the Silver Beach area by now.

According to Thrash, croaker and spot fishing has been good in the Piankatank River around Gwynn’s Island and in the creeks. He also said there are spadefish at Wolf Trap and the Cell, but that no citation fish have been reported. "In fact, as of June 29, there had been only one citation spadefish caught statewide," he said.
