Mathews American Legion Post 83 conducted a Bell Ceremony and Honor Guard service on Monday at the “Flags for Heroes” display on Main Street to honor all veterans and to recognize local veterans Ellis Hudgins, James Richards Jr., C.E. Ripley and David Vuich, who passed away during the past year. Members of the Honor Guard firing a three-volley salute were, from left, Al Smith, Tony Sine, Bill Morris, Ray Fleischer, Jim Warren and Ron Lambert. Tim Roscher, post commander, read a tribute to veterans of all wars, including the passage, “… in the destinies of veterans, their souls go marching on. Because of them, our lives are free. Because of them, our nation lives.”
