Flag retirement

Members of the Abingdon Ruritan Club teamed up with Boy Scout Troop 133 last Thursday to retire U.S. flags from the community that have passed their useful and dignified age. Many flags were ripped, torn, faded and partially destroyed. Collection efforts have been underway for the past six months. Jeannie Pendergraft, chair of the club’s Citizenship and Patriotism committee, spearheaded collection efforts. The ceremony was conducted by the Scouts and ended with the flags consumed in flames. Shown here at the ceremony are, from left, Sandra Hogge, Dianne Woolley, Julianna Woolley, Sandra Leiffer, Donna Marzocca, Sid Dugas, Don Sciria, Roger Dick, Jeannie Pendergraft, Jimmy Leiffer, John Pendergraft, Tony Dziadul, Mark Bradford, Jhie Hale and John Snyder. Many of those pictured are current and retired military.
