Flag disposal ceremony

American Legion Post 83, Mathews held a flag disposal ceremony on Flag Day, Friday, June 14, to destroy several hundred flags that were retired by residents over the past year because they had become too faded, torn, or ragged to be serviceable. Shown adding flags to the blaze is Post Commander Tim Roscher. From left in photo below are Ray Fleischer, Allan Riley and Roscher, who read from a manual of ceremonies that the flag is “a precious symbol of all that we have worked for and lived for, and died for—a free nation of free men and women…” Also assisting but not pictured were Ron Lambert and Jim Warren.
