Five MHS boats place at Al Urquia Regatta

Mathews High School rowers took two silver and three bronze finishes in a competitive field at Saturday’s Al Urquia Regatta at Occoquan. The Blue Devil crew raced in the men’s first, second and novice fours, the women’s first quad and men’s and women’s singles.

Racing in the women’s first quad, MHS rowers Madisson Haynes, Taylor Williams, Lilly Thompson and Jamie Robins took second in their heat and in the finals were just nipped to a third-place finish by rival J.E.B. Stuart. A strong Woodbridge crew took the gold with an open water finish. For the women’s double event, novice Kaitlyn James and Logan Howlett launched for their heat placing fourth which prevented them from advancing to the finals. Novice Karla Santiago was holding a strong third place in the women’s single when her oar got caught and she flipped. Much to her disappointment the officials did not let her finish.
