Fishing mediocre over Memorial Day weekend

Fishing was mediocre over the holiday weekend, according to reports from local bait and tackle shops.

Chuck Ashe of York River Feed and Fishing Supplies, Inc., at Gloucester Point reported a mixed bag of fish caught. He said anglers saw some flounder and some croakers in the York River and around the Gloucester Point Fishing Pier. "There were also some bluefish around," Ashe said.

Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters, Cobbs Creek, reported that medium-sized croaker and some medium-sized spot are available around Gwynn’s Island and in the creeks.

So far, Thrash said the flounder fishing appears to be better on the west side of the Chesapeake Bay than in the Buoy 42/Cell areas. "Keeper fish were caught near Cape Charles this weekend, but very few keepers came from the Cell area," he said.

There have been rumors of spadefish in the Cell, he said, but there were no confirmed catches as of Monday.
