Fish fry fundraiser to benefit Woodville School preservation

A fish fry fundraiser to benefit ongoing efforts to preserve Woodville School will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The First United Baptist Church, 6188 George Washington Memorial Highway, Gloucester.

Of the six Rosenwald schools built in Gloucester County in the 1920s, Woodville School is the only one left standing. Located on Route 17 in Ordinary, the school served the community’s African American community. Julius Rosenwald, CEO of Sears, Roebuck & Co., funded 5,300 elementary and training schools in partnership with local communities across the South.

The fundraiser includes fried fish “with sides of education, history and community,” a release from the Woodville Rosenwald School Foundation stated. The fish fry is being sponsored by the Men’s Ministry of First United.

The cost is $15 for one dinner or $25 for two, dine-in or take-out. In addition to the fish, the menu includes baked beans, cole slaw, rolls and dessert (assorted cake slices/brownies). All are welcome.

“The Woodville Rosenwald School Foundation is grateful for support from the community for a successful fundraiser,” the release stated. All funds raised will be matched by the Cook Foundation.

Oral history activities in support of Woodville’s Descendant Community Project will take place between noon and 2 p.m. in the church’s fellowship hall, as those gather to share oral histories of local alumni of Gloucester’s African American schools. The Rev. E. Randolph Graham, pastor of First United, will share his own oral history with participants.

There will also be a fall photo op available and children in costume are encouraged to attend.
