Achilles Annual May Day was held Wednesday and was, as usual, a brilliant success. The May Pole dance, drills, basket ball games and other athletic events furnished much entertainment for the big crowd in attendance, and the speaker of the day, Senator J. Douglas Mitchell, was well received. The ladies had provided all sorts of good things to eat, and full justice was done to them. In the evening the play, “Deacon Dubbs,” was presented at the auditorium and thoroughly delighted the large audience.

Happy days are here again, according to reports, for several hundred Gloucester men who make their living from the tidal waters and who have experienced hard times to the fullest measure and running over. The lowly crab is the medium of their present prosperity. A crab market is enjoying an unusual boom and, contrary to the usual condition, crabs are plentiful! A dollar a bushel is offered for the crustaceans and buy boats come for all that are available.

After nearly a decade of planning, fundraising and saving, ground was broken Tuesday morning on a 900-square-foot addition to the Gwynn’s Island Museum.
Gwynn’s Island Civic League president Tom Edwards said the project has been an example of the “wonderful, charitable” residents of Gwynn’s Island and Mathews County.
The expansion, which will include more room for exhibit space and 120 square feet of office space, is set to be completed later this summer, with a price tag of just under $70,000.
