Fire destroys New Point trailer

Fire destroyed an occupied camper trailer in New Point on Saturday morning.

Mathews Fire Chief Todd Wilson said two adults and one child had been living in the trailer, located on Heath Road. Family members heard something pop, smelled smoke, and got out of the trailer immediately, he said. They escaped without injury and are staying with friends.

The call came in to the sheriff’s office at 5:44 a.m. and was dispatched at 5:45 a.m., said Wilson. Firefighters from the New Point station arrived quickly, followed by two engines and a truck from Station 1 in the Court House. Wilson said the fire was under control by 5:59 a.m. Twenty volunteers responded to the call.

The fire is believed to have been electrical in nature, said Wilson, but the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating.
