Fire destroys man’s home and its contents

A fire destroyed a home on Tabernacle Road in Mathews late Saturday night.

Mathews Fire Chief Ronnie Lewis said the fire department was dispatched to a structure fire at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, with a man possibly trapped inside. A sheriff’s deputy arrived at 11:18 p.m. and reported that the person was out of the structure. Two minutes later, the first fire unit arrived and found that the 1½-story home had heavy fire throughout. The rescue squad arrived, evaluated the resident, and determined that no treatment was needed.

Four engines and a truck responded to the incident, said Lewis. They extinguished the fire with no problem and cleared the scene at 1:36 a.m. But at 3:40 a.m., the fire department was sent to the scene once more because the home was on fire again. Lewis said that the structure had a fully involved fire the second time, as well. It was extinguished, and the scene was cleared at 5:16 a.m.
