Fire damages Woodsville Road home

A fire last Thursday caused significant damage to a doublewide mobile home on Woodsville Road at Hayes.

According to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad assistant chief Herb Austin, the owner of the home was inside watching television when he heard a funny noise coming from the outside wind chimes around 1:30 p.m.

When he looked outside, Austin said the owner saw the fire and exited the structure from the other side and called 911.

When the first fire units responded to the scene several minutes later, personnel witnessed fire reaching out through the roof of the mobile home.

Austin said most of the fire was contained to the attic space, but water and smoke damage occurred throughout the home.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the occupants of the home are staying at a local hotel.
