A fire last Thursday morning caused significant damage to a Pinetta home. The cause of the fire on Poplar Ridge Road is still under investigation, according to Hanna Carson of the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.

When fire units responded to the scene around 7:40 a.m., Carson said volunteers saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the back corner of the house.

The homeowner called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the air vents, Carson said. The occupants of the home were advised to exit the structure and shortly thereafter, their smoke alarms went off.

The residents reported to the first arriving unit that all of the occupants were out of the house and no one was injured. However, it was later discovered that the homeowner’s cat did not make it out of the house.

The fire caused significant damage to the first and second floors in the rear corner of the house. GVFRS chief J.D. Clements estimated the damage from the fire at between $75,000 to $100,000, which includes both the structural damage and the contents of the home.

Carson said units remained on scene for approximately two hours, extinguishing the fire and conducting overhaul operations.

GVFRS responded with two engines, one rescue truck, one tanker, one ambulance and 18 members. Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad and Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire Department responded with mutual aid.

The residents are staying with family members, Carson said.
