Fire damages Cobbs Creek residence

Fire caused extensive damage to a residence on Linden Avenue in Cobbs Creek on Saturday afternoon.

The fire was called in by a neighbor at 2:49 p.m. and Fire Chief Todd Wilson said heavy fire and smoke were showing when crews arrived at the scene just three minutes later.

Those initial crews did a good job of knocking down the fire, said Wilson, and it was under control in about 45 minutes. Gloucester Fire and Rescue sent two engines with crews to back up the six engines and one rescue truck that Mathews had on the scene. Wilson said he had requested mutual aid because of the need to rotate crews during Saturday’s warm temperatures. Twenty to 25 firefighters were on the scene including those from Gloucester, he said. In addition, the MVFD Auxiliary brought water.
