Fewer reassessment appeals than past years in Gloucester

Gloucester County’s Real Estate Assessment department has seen a significant decrease in the amount of administrative appeals that have been filed following the latest reassessment, which became effective on Sunday.

According to assessor Derek Green, his office has received 377 applications for administrative reviews of 2017 reassessments, compared to 911 administrative reviews following the 2015 reassessment. This constitutes a 58 percent decrease in the number of appeals.

Furthermore, Green said there was a 90 percent reduction in appeals following the 2015 reassessment from the appeals in 2010.

“I am very pleased how successful the administrative review process was,” Green said. “The taxpayers were fantastic to work with and we received excellent feedback from them. Moving forward, we will continue to build on that trust and produce credible results.”

Green said the total taxable value in the county according to the 2015 reassessment was $4,303,045,004. This number  increased to $4,378,888,609 in the 2017 reassessment. He said 10,183 parcels saw an increase in value, while 9,934 saw a decrease and 3,911 parcels stayed the same.

A property owner still not satisfied following the administrative appeal may appeal to the county’s Board of Equalization, which will meet and begin hearing cases in March. Applications to appeal to the BOE are being accepted through Feb. 1. Following that process, property owners may appeal to the Circuit Court if still not satisfied with their reassessments.
