A fatality occurred on New Point Comfort Highway in Mathews on Saturday, Aug. 1, when a trailer became detached from a truck and struck another vehicle. According to a press release from the Virginia State Police, 61-year-old Donald Turbin of King William was driving a 2023 Chevrolet 2500 when, shortly after noon, the trailer he was towing became disconnected and struck a 2002 Ford F250 driven by 71-year-old Elizabeth Bush of New Point, who sustained fatal injuries. Turbin was charged with towing an uninspected trailer and failing to secure the load, said the release. The road was closed from the time of the accident until around 6:55 p.m., said Mathews Sheriff April Edwards. Traffic was turned around, and people were unable to enter or leave the Bavon and New Point areas for nearly six hours.
