Family displaced

Two people were displaced from their Hayes home early Tuesday morning after flames spread through a portion of the ranch-style house on Tillage Lane following a fire in the stove. According to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad spokesperson Robert Parlett, the residents had put their dinner in the oven to cook Monday evening when the electricity went out in that area for a period of time. The residents went to bed and forgot to turn the oven off before retiring for the night. The electricity came back on a few hours later and the food that was in the oven started a fire in the kitchen. Parlett said the residents were able to escape the house to the back deck without injury, but were taken to the hospital to be checked out. When first responders arrived around 12:50 a.m., Parlett said they noticed fire coming from several windows. The fire spread into the attic and there was smoke and water damage throughout the structure. Parlett reported that two engines, a rescue unit, a medic and about 20 volunteers responded to the scene. Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc., responded with mutual aid.
