Fall sports get underway at Gloucester and Mathews high schools next week, with tryouts for most teams beginning Monday. 

In Gloucester

Gloucester High School football tryouts will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday in preparation for the 2016 schedule. The Dukes are slated to scrimmage at Kempsville on Aug. 11 and at home with Warhill on Aug. 19. Gloucester will open the season Aug. 26 with a home game against Kecoughtan.

Field hockey tryouts will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Tryouts for the boys’ volleyball team will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Golf tryouts begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the Gloucester Country Club. 

Cross country gets underway with tryouts from 8 to 9:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8 and Tuesday, Aug. 9 at GHS and from 8 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10 at Beaverdam Park.
