An exhibit, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding in the Mathews County area runs throughout July at Mathews Memorial Library. Titled “The Battle of Cricket Hill: A Pivotal American Revolutionary Engagement,” the showcase is being launched by Mathews Archives, the partnership between Mathews County Historical Society and Mathews Memorial Library; it runs from July 1-31. A highlight of the display is an original clipping of an article from the Sept. 24, 1776, issue of the Leicester Journal, a historical regional newspaper in Leicester, England. It is an account of Lord Dunmore at the Battle of Gwynn’s Island. The item, framed between panes of glass, was a gift of the late Margaret Jones Perritt of Gloucester in July 1999 and is on display for the first time.
