Evelyn Donnelly Whitmore, 88, of Hayes, Va., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, in Riverside Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Newport News, Va., and was the widow of George R. Whitmore. Mrs. Whitmore was the first police woman for Newport News Police Dept. She retired from the Newport News Public Schools as a teacher’s assistant. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, and was very active with the Gloucester Senior Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn “Bev” Elks; her grandchildren, Timothy and his wife Jess, Jessica, and Megan; great-grandchildren, Faith and Liam; nephew, Howard Mixon and his wife Linda, and niece, Catherine Jordan and her husband David.
  A memorial service was held on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 5 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The family received friends following the service until 6:30.
