Eugene “Gene” Lincoln Harley passed away on July 31, 2026 at the age of 96. He was born to Methodist medical missionaries in Liberia, Africa, on April 15, 1930, and lived there until age 14 when he returned to the U.S. to attend New Hampton School in New Hampshire. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from Bates College in Maine and a doctorate from Duke University Medical School in 1957. At Duke he met Constance Mackey, who became his wife of 66 years. He served in the United States Air Force and lived at Vandenberg AFB, California, for two years, where he and Connie had two children. The family then lived in Richmond, Virginia, for several years before moving to metropolitan Atlanta, where Gene practiced medicine until retirement. After living in Vinings for over 50 years, the Harleys moved to the nearby retirement complex at Presbyterian Village. In 2024, Gene moved to Gloucester, Virginia, to be closer to his daughter.

Gene loved music and was a member of several singing groups in Cobb and Fulton counties, Georgia. He was very active in Trinity Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and a member of the choir for many years. He and Connie enjoyed traveling and being outdoors, and they supported several conservation groups.

Gene was predeceased by his parents, Dr. George and Winifred Harley; brothers, Charles and Robert Harley, and wife Constance Harley. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Nan Harley of Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ed Walker of Gloucester; granddaughter, Catie Rockefeller; grandson, Harley Walker and spouse Ashley Moy, and great-grandson, Hayes Rockefeller.

The family thanks the wonderful staff at Heron Cove 2 and Riverside Hospice in Gloucester, for taking such good care of Gene over the past 21 months.
