Heart Felt Touch Massage Therapy gained a new Esthetician, Heather Owens. A Holistic Master Esthetician for 34 years, Owens began at the practice in May.
Owens’s specialty is holistic facials. “I customize every facial for the client in front of me, so they’re never the same from client to client, or appointment to appointment—it’s what they need at the time,” she explained.
Being holistic, she focuses on touch, using hands-on massage techniques to help her clients. “I’m about the wellness of the person, the overall health,” she said. “Your skin is an organ and most people, for some reason, even though we know it, don’t treat it like it’s an organ.”
When looking at her clients’ skin, Owens talks to them about what she’s seeing: diet, stress, health concerns. “It all shows on your skin, so I get to know the client on all levels—mind, body, spirit, and that enables me to actually help improve, or at least offer them ways to improve, what’s going on both internally and externally.”
Though her specialty is holistic facials, Owens is also certified in oncology esthetics, acne facials, lymph drainage, and integrated nutrition. She has a double master’s degree in Divinity with a focus on Spiritual Counseling.
Owens was the full-time caregiver for her mother, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. “She had always been my biggest fan over the years and when she got sick, she missed her facials and I wanted to be able to provide them to her in a way that was beneficial to her,” Owens explained.
Deciding to get specialized, she was able to give her mother weekly facials, bringing her joy at the end of her life. With the certification, she is able to help cancer patients, whose skin often suffers as they go through their medical treatments.
Owens decided to get a master’s degree in Divinity, focusing on spiritual counseling, to be able to talk with her clients about their stress in an informed, non-religious way, and help point them in the right direction to help themselves get through their crisis. “I’m not a therapist, I’m an esthetician, but people talk to me about their problems,” she said.
It is not just a beauty treatment, she explained, it is self-care. “When you look in the mirror, if you don’t like what you see, that just makes everything worse,” she said.
With her certification in integrated nutrition, she is also able to help clients with their diet and hydration, to help keep their skin healthy. “We are what we eat and it does show up,” she said.
“We are all beautiful, we don’t all realize we’re beautiful, but we can bring that beauty out,” Owens said. “It’s my job to help you pull that beauty out from inside.”
As for preparing for an appointment, there isn’t anything clients need to do. “You come in, you get comfortable on the table, and you spend an hour and fifteen minutes—well, depending on the facial, being holistically pampered—it’s not just pampering, it’s necessary. I call it a luxurious necessity.” Appointments with Owens can be booked by contacting Heart Felt Touch Massage Therapy, or going online to their website.
